Every day an average of three people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed by spinal cord injury. People who were once fit and active are now unable to move or feel below the level of injury and are dependent on family and carers. Paralysis also affects other vital functions such as bladder and bowel control, blood pressure and breathing.
It takes courage to think about it, but we are all vulnerable to spinal cord injury– a serious fall, an accident on the road or the sports field… However, we can now believe in a future where spinal cord injury will be less daunting, its consequences less shattering.
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding research to develop reliable treatments for spinal cord injury. Since its foundation in 1980, Spinal Research has funded groundbreaking research, achieving revolutionary progress. Recent successes in the laboratory open the way to treatments that will restore sensation and movement to paralysed people.
We receive no direct funding from the government. This means that we rely on the generosity of people like you to advance our research programmes. Legacies are an important source of income for Spinal Research, enabling us to carry on funding the research effort and bringing us closer to the day when paralysis can be beaten.
