The last time I heard general counsel referred to as consigliere was in the The Godfather. Nonetheless, I agree with much of Richard Tapp’s article, with two exceptions.

The first is that the growth in the number of in-house lawyers is due to simple economics – the global financial crisis caused an over-supply of lawyers so that building an in-house legal department became relatively easy and cheap.

The second is that GCs still have a long way to go. In the FTSE 250 only 23 companies have a lawyer on their boards.
