Established in 1962, Elizabeth FitzRoy Support is a national charity that provides practical support to people with learning and physical disabilities, helping them to lead full and rewarding lives. We support them to make choices and to take control of their own lives, involving them in decisions not only about the care they receive, but about the organisation as a whole. We encourage people to play an active role in their own community and to enjoy life with as much independence as possible.

The story of the Maudsley Charity began with a charitable deed over 760 years ago.

In 1247 a former Sheriff of the City of London endowed funds to form the Priory of St Mary which was later named the Bethlem Hospital, the world's oldest psychiatric institution, based at the time in Bishopsgate, near Liverpool Street station today.

Over the centuries, donations have continued to play an important role in improving the experience of people treated at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) and to promote mental health and well being for all.

As children, most of us take for granted the chance to get out and about, exploring, climbing trees, visiting the park and hanging out with friends. For our children, and grandchildren, we expect nothing less, but for many with a special need, it just isn’t possible. If you have a physical disability, the difficulties are obvious, but, if you have a learning disability or autism, it may be hard to relate to other people and join their games.
