FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments) is a charity, founded in 1969, which aims to eliminate the need for live animal experiments and put an end to the suffering inflicted upon millions of laboratory animals.

The organisation researches, develops and promotes practical alternative techniques that can be used to replace live animals in biomedical research. FRAME considers that the current scale of live animal experimentation is unacceptable and should not be allowed to continue. However, we recognise that the immediate and total abolition of all animal experiments is not possible, if vital medical research is to continue and the remaining diseases which lessen the quality of human and animal life are to be overcome, and if new household products, medicines and industrial and agricultural chemicals are to be adequately tested to identify potential health hazards.

FRAME advocates the Three Rs approach to this problem: Reduce, Refine, Replace. Reduce the numbers of animals used through better experimental design. Refine procedures so that the suffering of any animals necessarily used is minimised. Replace animals by eliminating the need to use them through the development, validation and promotion of alternative techniques.

FRAME operates an innovative Research Programme to develop cell culture methods as alternatives to the use of animals in toxicity testing and it is at the forefront of research in this area. Funds are urgently required to maintain and expand the scope of this vital work. We need your support in the form of donations, covenants and legacies.
