Heart Research UK (formerly National Heart Research Fund)
Pioneers in the fight against heart disease
At Heart Research UK we fund research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. In 2007, we celebrated our 40th anniversary and over the last four decades we have funded many pioneering projects at the cutting-edge of science. We paid for six of the eight first successful UK heart transplants, carried out by Sir Terence English at Papworth Hospital. Life saving technology that we now take for granted, such as heart valves, angioplasty and more recently, amazing artificial heart pumps, would not have been developed without our help. The charity funds groundbreaking medical research in hospitals and universities around the UK. In 2000, we funded the first ever artificial heart pump that gave a Birmingham man, Peter Houghton, more than seven years of extra life and our dream is to develop this technology so it can be used in children’s delicate hearts. All our income comes from people like you, who support us through individual donations, payroll giving, corporate sponsorship, fundraising activities and legacies. Each year, more then half our income comes from people who are kind enough to remember us in their will. Please help us in our pioneering fight against heart disease and help more people to live healthier, happier, longer lives
