The Japan Animal Welfare Society ( JAWS UK) was founded firstly in Japan in 1945 by British and other foreign residents who were appalled by the general ill treatment of animals there, in particular the cruelties inflicted upon dogs awaiting unregulated vivisection in the teaching hospitals.

Upon their return to the UK, they founded JAWS UK in order to fund the improvement of animal welfare activity in Japan.
JAWS UK achieves our aim through specific funding to:

  • Reputable animal welfare groups and individuals involved in the day to day rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and re-homing of sick, injured and abandoned animals.
  • Neutering schemes involving pet and feral animals.
  • The work of JAWS Tokyo and its two veterinary/ welfare inspectors.
  • The funding of animal welfare seminars involving welfare groups police, legal and government representatives.

Much has been achieved by JAWS UK funding but despite the introduction of new Animal Welfare Legislation, there are still many animal welfare issues to resolve that require grant aid including, the large scale abandonment of pets, unfit animals and poor conditions in pet shops, unregulated puppy farms, ill treatment of retired racehorses, poor conditions in zoos, cruel rituals involving bears and horses and the ongoing inhumane slaughter of whales, dolphins and porpoises.
JAWS UK relies upon legacies to supply 80% of its income which enables us to support vital day to day animal welfare work.
Please remember us in your will and/or send a donation to ensure our work can continue.
