Type 1 diabetes means that the body cannot regulate blood glucose levels on its own. Glucose is a type of sugar, which is a source of energy.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that stays with people their entire lives.
- It has a life long impact on those diagnosed with it and their families.
- People with type 1 diabetes rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive.
- Type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in childhood, but it can happen at any age.
- Type 1 diabetes affects about 350,000 people in the UK, 25,000 of them children.
- Type 1 reduces life expectancy by around 20 years.
- Type 1 diabetes can happen to anyone and is not caused by anything that the person with the condition, or their parents, did or did not do.
There is currently no cure.
Insulin gives people with type 1 diabetes a chance. But only research will give them the cure. JDRF exists to find the cure for type 1 diabetes. We are the world’s largest charitable funder of research into the condition.
At JDRF, we believe that finding the cure is just a matter of time and money. The more money we can raise, the more research we fund and the faster we will find the cure. A gift in memory of a loved one will help bring that cure a little closer. Join us in finding the cure.
