The Northern Counties Kidney Research Fund was established in 1972 to support work for kidney transplant and dialysis patients in the North of England. Research by scientists, physicians and surgeons is funded. There are currently six full time posts in Newcastle which the fund has paid for.

Project grants have been given to doctors at an advanced stage of their training towards becoming consultant physicians or surgeons. Expensive items for research which could not have otherwise been acquired have been bought, and running costs for laboratories have been paid. Many valuable studies have been performed in this way and twenty trainees have gained higher degrees as a result. An important side effect has been that many of these doctors acquired a lifelong interest in research during their time supported by Northern Counties Kidney Research Fund and have continued to carry out research throughout their working lives.

All those who work for the fund do so voluntarily, and as a consequence administrative costs are minimal. Over 98% of all donations go to kidney research, and all the money is spent in the North.

This charity is for those who wish to see the North flourish and retain its pre-eminence in medical research.
