All too often older people with arthritis are told that it is something they ‘just have to put up with’. We disagree. At The Arthritic Association we have been told by hundreds of members that the Programme we offer has lessened their symptoms of this painful and debilitating condition.

Easing the pain of arthritis - naturally

The disability that arthritis can bring is rarely understood. It is too often considered a ‘normal’ part of growing old. Osteoarthritis, the ‘wear and tear’ arthritis of the joints, can be exceedingly painful as well as greatly limiting physically. Inflammatory arthritis, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, can cause joints to swell, fingers and toes to become crooked, stiffness and wracking pain to run throughout the body.

The treatment and management of breast cancer has been revolutionised in the last 35 years since I became President of the Breast Cancer Research Trust . The death rate has fallen by 30% in the U.K. and many patients now experience a personal cure. This in the main has been due to unremitting and time consuming research not only into new drugs and ways of diagnosing, assessing and treating patients but into the basic causes of breast cancer itself.

It sums up the work of our charity, for the knowledge we help to acquire through research, and spread through teaching and publications, is a powerful way of preventing blindness. Scientific research has led to many breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of the conditions that cause blindness, but there is still a great deal we do not understand.

The Cat Action Trust consists of a national network of branches working to save feral cats from a life of hunger, hardship, and abuse. Feral cats are ordinary domestic cats living wild because they have been lost or abandoned. And they multiply. Kittens grow up without contact with humans and are therefore ‘feral’ i.e. living without contact with humans, and terrified when they do encounter them. They form colonies wherever they can find food – the grounds of hospitals and other institutions, farms, disused buildings: they are the inhabitants of dereliction. The traditional answer to this is for a pest control firm to trap and kill the whole colony – leaving a vacuum which will soon be refilled.

Church Army exists to share the good news of Jesus with the seven out of 10 people who have little or no meaningful contact with church throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. We have more than 300 evangelists who reach out through faith, words and action to those who are marginalised by our society: the homeless, the elderly, those living on deprived housing estates and many others. We are also committed to training and deploying evangelists for local mission in pioneering situations, equipping and working in partnership with churches and others for the long-term.

The Trust supports the Veterinary School at the University of Bristol through funding for equipment and clinical facilities for the treatment and hospitalisation of animals. Veterinary science and skills are advancing at the same breakneck speed as medical science but are much more complex, encompassing as they do smaller companion animals, high value large animals such as blood stock and rare breeds and the exotic creatures and stranger species that many of our students encounter both at home and, increasingly, overseas. The most up-to-date equipment needed for new advanced techniques is vital but expensive and facilities for animals undergoing such treatment must be superlative.

Energy – a basic requirement for economic, health and social development

More than 1.4 billion people worldwide cannot access electricity. Indoor air pollution from fuel used for lighting and heating (paraffin, wood, grass, animal dung or charcoal) is a major cause of respiratory disease and kills nearly 2 million people every year – mainly women and children. Lack of access to energy hinders economic activity, and affects all aspects of development – it is a significant barrier to good education, better health and finding a way out of poverty for the world’s poorest people.
