National Trust
Founded in 1895, the National Trust looks after special places throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland for ever, for everyone. We are Europe’s biggest conservation body and a charity that is completely independent of Government, receiving no direct state funding for our core work. We rely for income on membership fees, donations and legacies, and revenue raised from our commercial operations.
We now have over 3.8 million members and 61,500 volunteers. We protect and open to the public over 350 historic houses, gardens and parks, ancient monuments and nature reserves. We look after over 709 miles of coastline and 255,000 hectares of land, much of which is of outstanding natural beauty. But it doesn’t stop there. We also look after forests, woods, fens, beaches, farmland, downs, moorland, islands, archaeological remains, castles, villages - for ever, for everyone.
Only 20% of our properties can fund their own permanent preservation. The cost of caring for these special places is high and there has never been a greater need for legacy gifts. All legacies are only ever used for conservation, property maintenance or acquisitions and never on administration costs. Legacies can be directed to a particular property or area of work which may be close to our supporters’ hearts.
