Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary is a 55 acre farm situated in the Rossendale Valley, Lancashire. It became a registered charity in 1969. Bleakholt offers sanctuary to the unwanted dogs, cats, goats, ponies, horses, donkeys and rabbits whose owners have tired of them in old age or who cannot afford to keep them. It offers shelter to cats and kittens living rough in hedges or under rubbish tips scavenging for food because no one cares. We have recently taken in a 30 year old starving pony with its foal and a cat which had suffered the trauma of spinning in a washing machine. Also a dog left to starve in the backyard with its 10 pups when its owner moved.
A consignment of 38 stray cats were recently left in containers near the sanctuary – most have been rehomed.

Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain usually caused by infection invading the brain or by the autoimmune system attacking the brain in error. Encephalitis is indiscriminate showing no respect for age, sex, culture or nationality. Encephalitis has a high mortality rate. Many survivors are left with an acquired brain injury, the degree and severity of which will vary, and struggle for the rest of their lives with the consequences of this devastating condition. Every year around 4000 new cases are diagnosed within UK. Despite new advances in medicine there is a lack of research and information about this condition. Support for dealing with the effects of a brain injury is sometimes very poor. A lack of awareness among the general public and professionals makes it even more difficult for people to fully recover.
