Macular Disease Society, The
Macular Disease, causing loss of central vision, is the biggest cause of registered blindness in people over 55 in the western world. Over 500,000 people in the UK live with this distressing condition.
MD causes loss of central vision, so many with MD can no longer drive, read or recognise faces easily. Everyday tasks such as cooking a meal, shopping or watching TV become difficult, falls and broken bones can result among older sufferers and people can become depressed and isolated. For those with the most common “dry” form, there is no treatment and where treatment is available, it does not restore lost sight.
The Macular Disease Society is the only national charity dedicated to people with MD. We sponsor research into new treatments and a cure. We also support research to develop equipment and techniques to improve the quality of life of people living with MD.
We support our 16,000 members and more with information and advice through our helpline, counselling and advocacy services and a national network of volunteer support groups. We also offer a wide range of publications, run conferences and campaign for better access to treatments and services.
Legacies are vital in funding our research programme, as well as enabling us to help those who would otherwise be without support. Every gift, large or small, will help us support those coping now and in the future with macular disease. Thank you on their behalf for thinking of us.
