Yorkshire Cancer Research
Since Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) was set up in 1925, it has become the most successful regional medical research charity in the UK. We fund internationally recognised research into the causes and cures of cancer at universities and their associated teaching hospitals throughout Yorkshire.
YCR is not a regional division of a national charity – it is an independent charity, based and operating in Yorkshire only. We are still, however, at the very forefront of the international fight to find a cure for cancer.
Our scientists and clinicians are among the world leaders in the fight against cancer. The concentration of specialists and their expertise in Yorkshire means that cancer sufferers all over the world have access to some of the best treatments and therapies.
The charity relies almost entirely on donations. Legacies are one of our main sources of income, without legacies we would not be able to continue to fund at our current level. We have a network of around 40 local voluntary committees spread throughout the region working tirelessly to raise much needed funds. Money is also raised through individual fundraising activities, personal donations, gift aid, regular giving, donations from earnings and in memoriam gifts.
Breakthroughs do not happen every day, but daily we do add to the knowledge held about cancer. Only through research do we understand more about the disease. This greater understanding leads to better diagnosis and treatment for patients, giving real hope to those diagnosed with cancer.
