Law Direct Solicitors

On 3 February 2010, the Panel of Adjudicators Sub-Committee resolved to intervene into the recognised body, Law Direct Solicitors, of Greenwich House, 5 Sealand House, Chester CH1 1LD, on the following grounds:

1. On 11 May 2009, a compulsory winding-up order was made against Law Direct Solicitors.
2. Exercise of intervention powers to protect client interests.

The committee further resolved to intervene into David Saville Slingsby’s practice at Law Direct Solicitors on the grounds that it was necessary to exercise intervention powers to protect client interests.

Stuart Farr of Laytons, 22 St John Street, Manchester M3 4EB, 0161 834 2100, has been appointed as the authority’s agent. The first date of attendance was 8 February 2010.

Mr Slingsby’s current practising certificate has not been suspended.

Nikki Modie Solicitors
On 4 February 2010, the committee resolved to intervene into the remnants of Nikki Modie Solicitors, of 2 Portland Road, South Norwood, London SE25 4PF, and any other practices or former practices of Nikki Ngozi Modie-Nwaefulu.

The committee also resolved that it was necessary to exercise the powers conferred by part II of schedule 1 to the Solicitors Act 1974 in relation to Nikki Ngozi Modie-Nwaefulu. The reasons for intervention were:

1. Failure to comply with the Solicitors Accounts Rules 1998;
2. Failure to comply with the Solicitors Code of Conduct 2007; and
3. To exercise powers of intervention to protect client interests.

Karen Thompson of Lester Aldridge, Russell House, Oxford Road, Bournemouth BH8 8EX, 01202 786 161, DX 7623 Bournemouth, has been appointed to act as the authority’s agent.

The first day of attendance was 9 February 2010. Modie-Nwaefulu allowed the papers to be lifted and did not indicate on the day of attendance that it was her intention to challenge the intervention.

Modie-Nwaefulu was struck off the roll by order of the SDT on 28 January.

Fowkes & Son
On 2 February 2010, the committee resolved to intervene in the above-named firm of 62 Eastern Road, Romford, Essex RM1 3QA, on the basis that it was satisfied that grounds for intervention existed under paragraphs 1(1)(h) and (m) of part I of schedule 1 to the Solicitors Act 1974, namely that Nefisa Joan Mamudu and Olatubosun Daramola had abandoned their practice and that it was necessary to exercise intervention powers to protect the interests of clients or former or potential clients of Mamudu and Daramola or the interests of the beneficiaries of any trust of which Mamudu and Daramola are or
were trustees.

James Dunn of Devonshires Solicitors, 30 Finsbury Circus, London EC2M 7DT, 020 7628 7576, has been appointed to act as the intervention agent.

The first date of attendance at the practice address was 4 February 2010 and all client files/accounting records were uplifted.
Mamudu and Daramola did not hold practising certificates at the time of the intervention.

Neilson & Co
On 4 February 2010, the committee resolved to intervene into the above-named firm and any other practice(s) or former practice(s) of Andrew Pinnell and Stephen Hyett. Pinnell and Hyett had formerly practised at 30 Harcourt Street, London W1H 4AA under the firm name Neilson & Co which closed on 31 October 2008.

The reason for the intervention was that the committee resolved that it was necessary to exercise the intervention powers to protect the interests of clients (or former or potential clients) of Pinnell and Hyett and their former firm, or the interests of the beneficiaries of any trust of which Pinnell or Hyett is or was a trustee.

David Jacobs of Stanley Tee, 6 High Street, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire CM23 2LU, 01279 755200, DX 50404, Bishops Stortford, has been appointed to act as the intervention agent.

He attended at the former offices of Neilson & Co on 8 February 2010. He uploaded the archived practice papers from a local storage facility. The practising certificates of Pinnell and Hyett were not suspended.
