Ageing Solicitors

Wednesday 08 January 1986

I have considerable sympathy for Peta Pan with regard to endeavouring to find a position at the ripe old age of 40 ([1985] Gazette, 24 October, 2966). I do not confess to be as old as Peta Pan but, after being in the profession some 15 years and being told that I would not progress any further unless I qualified, I therefore, at the age of 30, set about endeavouring to qualify and was subsequently admitted at the age of 34.
I found myself having to look for employment during the early part of last year and, much to my astonishment, several firms of solicitors replied to my applications by indicating that at 34 I wastoo old for their practice. This concerned me greatly, bearing in mind that in theory I still had 31 years' work ahead of me. I imagine that there are many other individuals like myself and Peta Pan who qualify slifhtly later in life, believing that there is a better future ahead, but unfortunately being told you are now too old for the job.
I wish Peta Pan every success in seeking a position and perhaps we can form a Society for young (ageing) solicitors.
