Who? Karen Todner, senior and managing partner at London firm Kaim Todner.

Why is she in the news? She represented 42-year-old hacker Gary McKinnon, who stands accused of infiltrating top secret US military and NASA computers in the wake of the 11 September 2001
terror attacks.

Glasgow-born McKinnon will now take his fight against a US extradition order – that would see him stand trial in America – to the European Court of Human Rights after losing an appeal at the House of Lords on Wednesday last week.

If tried in the US, McKinnon, who has admitted hacking into the systems but claims he was looking for evidence of UFOs, could face life in jail.

Thoughts on the case: ‘I disagree with the decision. I feel very strongly that he shouldn’t be extradited. He is British, he committed the offence here, he was arrested here, he has co-operated fully and he should be prosecuted here.

‘Gary McKinnon is neither a terrorist nor a terrorist sympathiser. Undoubtedly the authorities have some evidence with which they could charge him, so why isn’t he being prosecuted here?’

Dealing with the media: ‘The media response to Gary has been very positive and I have done my best to co-operate with them as much as I can. They also seemed very clued-up about the issues and the case overall. It was very positive but very time-consuming.’

Career low point: ‘Probably on Wednesday when we were refused in the House of Lords.’

Career high point: ‘Obtaining a suspended sentence for the Australian nanny Louise Sullivan, who suffered severe mental health problems and admitted fatally injuring six-month-old Caroline Jongen.’
