Circuit judge Khatun Sapnara, who sits at Kingston Crown Court and East London Unified Family Court, has some useful advice for the 5,000 applicants for judicial appointments every year.

‘In terms of the interview, you do have to dress appropriately,’ she told a seminar at the Law Society on improving judicial diversity.

Isn’t that stating the fairly obvious? Apparently not. ‘I have seen people make some odd decisions in terms of what they were going to wear,’ she said, without going into details. However her advice was: ‘If you think of someone who’s going to come in and command a courtroom, what would you expect a judge to look like?’
