Costs control attack
Solicitors should not be required to file binding estimates of costs which could be used to limit recovery from clients, the Law Society has said. In its response to a government consultation paper on controlling costs, the Society said attempts to enforce price control between solicitors and clients ‘had no part to play in a modern competitive market’ and went against government policy.

President’s column: China
On 14 June I was to be host at the Law Society at a lunch for the Chinese minister of justice for whom the central office of information had planned a trip. Shortly beforehand it was cancelled. Despite the mounting evidence of recent days that freedom of expression counts in the authorities’ minds as counter revolution, may we all hope that justice may prevail during these turbulent days in Beijing, and that the minister will be able to exert influence on the leadership.

Rugby Football Club
Lord Riddell, in proposing the health of the Club, said that in the old days, solicitors very rarely saw one another without quarrelling. There was a much better feeling creeping in between solicitors nowadays. He was certain that the Club would do a great deal towards fostering that feeling of friendship among solicitors. It was a very difficult thing to quarrel with a man with whom you had played on the Rugger field.
