Mike Semple Piggot, aka Charon QC talks to Jonathan Goldsmith about the role of the CCBE, the Akzo Nobel case on in-house counsel, the new Justice Commissioner and the opportunities for lawyers in Europe.

Jonathan Goldsmith is the Secretary General of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), which represents over 700,000 European lawyers through its member bars and law societies. The CCBE deals with a wide range of EU and global issues, such as anti-money-laundering legislation, an EU-wide Code of Conduct, competition matters affecting the legal profession, and human rights. He is an English solicitor.

Mike talks to Lord Falconer, a former Lord Chancellor, about assisted dying and his amendment to the Suicide Act which was defeated in the Lords recently as well as the establishment of a new Supreme Court.

Lord Falconer became Lord Chancellor In 2003, with the remit of abolishing the office. His reform included the creation of a Supreme Court for the UK, and a commission to appoint judges. He also made a full-time independent judge the Head of the Judiciary for England and Wales, and introduced an elected Speaker for the House of Lords.
