ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the Army’s National Charity. Originally established as the Army Benevolent Fund in 1944, we provide a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families from every conflict. We give assistance to individuals as well as making grants to a large number of charities and partner organisations, providing specialist support on our collective behalf. Our work touches the lives of around 75,000 people each year, sustaining the British Army ‘family’ both at home and around the world. We are The Soldiers’ Charity: ‘For Soldiers - For Life’.

Last year we provided over 4,000 individual grants at a cost of just over £3.5 million, with a further £3.5 million provided to support other specialist service charities. We simply couldn’t do this without the support of the public, veterans and serving soldiers. Legacies from our generous supporters last year accounted for over £4 million of the Charity’s income.

Every year, around 20% of our total income comes from supporters who have chosen to leave a lasting legacy. It is thanks to these special gifts that we can reach out to more members of the Army family, when they need our help the most, and as you know, many soldiers who have suffered serious physical injuries or psychological trauma will continue to need our support for life.

The complexity and cost of supporting serving and retired soldiers and their dependents is rising steadily, year on year. This means we are more dependent than ever on the generosity of our supporters in order that we are not faced with making the painful choice of making essential grants to individuals and supporting delivery charities, or not.
