Africa’s health in Africa’s hands.
AMREF is Africa’s leading health development organisation; bringing good quality health care closer to the poorest and hardest to reach communities. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, over 90% of our staff are African, meaning no-one knows African communities better. Our vision is lasting health change in Africa.
AMREF was founded in 1957 by three surgeons who used the tools of their time - aircraft and radios - to deliver health services to the most remote communities in East Africa. Today AMREF works across the continent.
- We believe that the power for change lies within Africa’s communities.
- We ensure that communities have the knowledge, skills and means to maintain their good health and break the cycle of poor health and poverty.
- We reach, respect and become part of communities and help them make change from within.
AMREF works to increase access to treatment for diseases such as HIV, malaria, TB and diarrhoea, and prevents poor health through community education. We train thousands of health workers every year, we improve diagnostic services and we carry out hundreds of surgical operations as part of our Flying Doctor programme. We focus on women and children who are the heart of their communities.
Your legacy will ensure that AMREF can continue saving and transforming lives, and build a healthier Africa.
