Our mission is to create opportunities for people in southern Africa to develop their full potential through education and the assertion of their human rights. Key principles of our partnerships include widening access to education at all levels, applying academic research to development issues and fostering future leaders across the region. Our priority areas are health, education, human rights and environment. Having grown out of the anti-apartheid movement, we have a deep commitment to social justice.
Our programmes include:
- ’Scholarship in Action’. In 2013 year we supported 94 scholars from ten southern African countries at British and South African universities including King’s, SOAS, Sussex, UCT, Wits, and Rhodes. We support people who share our commitment to social justice and can be agents of change. A number of our scholarships are awarded in memory of named individuals.
- Human Rights Research: Our research is used to underpin human rights litigation.Last year we supported research into detention conditions at a notorious South African ‘repatriation centre’ leading to the release of 26 unlawfully detained people.
- Capacity building in healthcare. We have funded hundreds of southern African health professionals to access further study and training, from paediatricians to community health workers, psychologists, oncology nurses, and medical researchers. Over 95% of these return to their home countries to practice, mostly in public hospitals.
- Community education projects in Malawi and South Africa: we focus on rural areas, children with special needs, and girls’ empowerment. Our programmes reach thousands of children in hundreds of schools.
