Registered Charity No: 293446 (England & Wales).
Opening Doors London (ODL) specifically aims to meet the needs of older LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) communities. It is aimed at men and women who identify as LGBT and are over the age of 50. We have members from across London and beyond, and are the largest organisation working with older LGBT people in the UK.
The service aims to combat isolation in the older LGBT communities through providing:
- regular social activities
- a dedicated signposting and referral service
- a befriending service
- opportunities to get involved
Older LGBT people have lived through a time when homosexuality was illegal, people were imprisoned and subjected to demeaning ‘curing treatments’ through the mental health system, mothers routinely had children taken away from them, and trans people continue to face severe discrimination and harassment. Older LGBT people are more likely to live alone, be isolated and at a significantly higher risk of suicide than heterosexual older people. An older LGBT specific service is vitally important to meet the needs of the 1000 vulnerable older people that we support each year.
The project also campaigns with service user Ambassadors to ensure OLGBT voices are heard by policy makers in order to help them develop appropriate and inclusive services for older LGBT people.
We can only continue to provide these services with the generous help of our donors and supporters. Please consider leaving us a gift in your will.
