An unregistered barrister and former solicitor who was struck off for filing a misleading witness statement has been thrown out of the barristers’ profession.
Michael O’Maoileoin was disbarred following a hearing at the Bar Tribunal & Adjudication Service after the Bar Standards Board (BSB) brought charges of professional misconduct.
O’Maoileoin, whilst practising as a solicitor in the London office of Hugh James, dishonestly provided a witness statement containing false or misleading information during High Court proceedings. He was struck off by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) in March 2018. The BSB’s disciplinary proceedings began after this decision.
A BSB spokesperson said: ‘Providing dishonest or false witness statements in High Court proceedings is incompatible with continued membership of the Bar. The tribunal’s decision that he should be disbarred reflects this.’
O’Maoileoin was called to the Bar of England and Wales by Inner Temple in October 2004. The tribunal’s decision is open to appeal.
