I am a commercial solicitor who provides professional legal translation and interpreting from Japanese and German into English. Since 2007 I have been delivering accurate and reliable translation solutions to a wide range of law firms, businesses, academics and charities in the UK, Japan and across Europe.
After training at a City firm, I spent time in the Tokyo offices of two major international law firms, and one year on secondment to a Japanese trading house. I subsequently worked in the commercial department of a large Bristol firm and for a smaller law firm in Zurich.
Excellent language skills
Prior to studying law, I read Japanese at Oxford University and at Waseda University, Tokyo. I have lived and worked in Japan for more than 9 years, including 4 years as a solicitor. I have been working in and with Japanese for more than 20 years and am familiar with Japanese customs and business etiquette. I was brought up with German as my mother tongue and approximately one third of my work now consists of German to English translation.
I am a Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and sit on their Professional Conduct Committee. I am also a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Translation in context
I know from experience that solicitors often rely heavily on translated documentation. It is critical that these translations are practical, accurate, appropriately phrased and fit for purpose. The complexity and subtlety of the legal language must be retained, terminology and references used consistently, and foreign legal concepts highlighted and explained.
- Contracts such as joint venture agreements and shareholder agreements
- Lease agreements, property sale and purchase agreements
- Litigation documents including orders, appeals and judgments
- Agency and distribution agreements
- Employment agreements
- Insurance policies and agreements
- Company reports
- Codes of conduct
- Articles of association and constitutional documents
- Law reports
- Correspondence files
I am also available for interpreting for business meetings, conferences, legal consultations, court hearings and arbitrations.
I am often asked to check texts that have been written by people for whom English is not their first language, and rewrite the texts so that they sound “native”. I am always happy to do this, although some discussion is sometimes necessary to ensure that the intended meaning is succinctly and fluently expressed.
Why choose Perfectly Phrased?
I am an experienced professional translator and interpreter with a strong legal background, which makes me an excellent choice for supplying your legal translation and interpreting needs. I am familiar with the needs of lawyers and am used to working to the high standards and with the attention to detail that they expect.
