These two people forget or ignore the fact that, whether they like it or not, a lot of our law is derived from the Christian tradition. An atheist relation of mine once told me that, even though he had no belief in a god or any religion, he still regarded the teachings of Jesus Christ as the best philosophy for living a worthwhile life in society.

The whole of the original law of equity was based on the notion a conscience as understood by Christians in the middle ages. Without the notion that everyone had the same conscience because it was the prompting of God, interference in the otherwise lawful activities of subjects would have been seen as dependent upon royal whim and soon discredited.

To pretend that we can now ignore that connection is the equivalent of pretending that it's not important to remember Magna Carta because now we have democracy and modern laws which give us protection and have grown up since then.
