In family law women have been in the majority for quite some time. Family law is also one area where, until this year, legal aid played a large part. This could mean that a disproportionate number of women did legal aid work which paid (and pays) less than a third of the fees earned outside legal aid.

Until someone does some work on this possibility we cannot be sure that most of the pay differential isn't due to low legal aid rates and thus the fault of government rather than the profession.
