Most of the professions significant problems come from greater liability and low fees. Lower fees inevitably lead to lower standards followed by mistakes and negligence claims. Lawyers must stop competing only by showing how cheap they are. Instead we must compete in terms of showing excellence of service to clients and the best quality advice. Perhaps our regulator should ask any firm to explain the basis upon which it can offer a full and competent service at a given fee whilst continuing to stay in business. When the profession gets back on a proper commercial footing, clients will once again get the level of advice they deserve and law firms will make a reasonable return - and those whose business model is broken will go.
