The Tudors I recall simply did not allow Defendants to use Counsel on the basis that they would get in the way of justice somehow. Mr Grayling is the first Lord Chancellor since Tudor times who is not a lawyer. Are these facts related? Can we please have a 21st Century Justice System now where if you are accused of a crime you have a right to representation without silly arguments about whether terror suspects are entitled to it because they are obviously guilty? Of course they are entitled to it and of course any civilized country should pay for it – the worst the crime the more reason to have representation. I am astonished that there are people in the profession who think otherwise. Leave Kangaroo Courts and summary justice to the annals of history please or frankly I will go and live in a proper country where proper lawyers have proper opinions.
