I do not necessarily go along with the comments about the Land Registry service being wonderful. To me they deal with most things pretty well but the cull of experienced staff in the last 5 years and closure of local offices means they struggle to deal with anything out of the ordinary in efficient manner. The possibility of them taking over searches from local authorities is ludicrous. It sounds like another expensive IT project which is bound to fail. Search provision (whether you use officials or regulated) is already varied and competitive so why introduce a Government backed supplier? The market doesn't need it and and the public money that is no doubt being spent on the project right now is a waste. Remember the ill fated matrix scheme and the cost of that anyone? this looks like another black hole. Perhaps in return the local authorities or search companies should be able to have a stab at land registration if we want competition? Why the Law Society is backing them I do not know - they too will plough on with their equally expensive and ill fated portal scheme. Can we not just all stick to what we are supposed to be there for - the land registry for maintaining an accurate register, the Law Society trying to help its members. conveyancers/solicitors doing conveyancing and search companies or local authorities doing searches?
