Michael, in the French system the police have twenty hours to 'question' a suspect before he is entitled to a lawyer. This is so that they can thrash out everything with him first. Have a read of The Dominici Affaire and after that The Seznec Affaire if you want some hair curling stories about miscarriages of justice. More recently the Outreau Affaire led to detentions of innocents for years, businesses ruined and suicides. Then just for good measure three judges retire with and vote with the jury, just to make sure they get it right, you see. My advice to you is at least do not copy the French system.
