Well, Pamela, I entirely agree that legal aid is an essential public service. Sadly we can no longer afford it. If New Labour had not spent £3bn each on two new aircraft carriers, however, we could have had three years' legal aid at present cost. So we can now see where their priorities lie, jobs for the shipbuilders of Govern.

I also think hospitals, schools and coast guard services are essential, but we are insolvent as a nation and so the things we considered essential must now be viewed, in part at least, as optional extras and for the time being at least.

And at least no one is going to die as the result of not being represented, is he? If you are in trouble on the high seas there is a very real risk of that with a diminished coast guard service.

And finally, as for the tax cut for the rich to 45%, that's a bit rich too. From 1997 until 2010 the top rate was 40%.
