A couple earning a below national average wage of say 20K PA each would not be eligible for legal aid. Yet be expected to defend themselves against a prosecuting barristers with potentially decades of experience and expertise. Who on earth charged with say money laundering of 5K would run a trial when it would be cheaper to plead guilty. Innocent or not??. Mr Evans is lucky he had the means to fund his defence.
