In the very early days I was bullied as an articled clerk; I moved to work in a big corporate, was "disposed of" there as I didn't like the brown nosing; into high street practice and I was "moved out" to make way for a "name" on reorganisation. In a specialist criminal defence role I was bullied and asked to overlook irregularities. Going solo as a freelance I was manipulated by firms who didn't always pay for what I did. I branched into sole practice briefly until Legal Aid Franchising meant that the admin required paid assistance that would have put me below minimum wage levels. Paused with career while children small and wife became provider in better paid job in HR, went back to do some criminal defence but hours and family didn't mix; took longer break. Returned to practice in-house which is fine and about the only role that I would recommend. Am fairly well respected in the relevant industry, but somewhat undervalued by employer (paid lower than NQ) although to be fair I only work 40hrs per week. I have warned both of my children off law as a career! Perhaps looking back I should have been more amenable to the brown nosing!
