Between 1900 and 1990 the average no. of pages of statutes per annum was 250. Between 1997 and 2005 that figure had grown to 3,750. In 1975 there were c. 20,000 solicitors and 2,000 barristers. Now those figures have grown to 130,000 and 10,000 respectively.In 1997 there were 8,000 criminal offences. By 2010 that figure had grown to 12,000.

The system has become unaffordable and this is in part how New Labour got us into this mess. They did not help by doubling GPs pay for fewer hours, PPF initiatives (see the mess South Thames NHS trust is in), schools, prisons (1975 population 42,000, now 80,000 +), two new aircraft carriers at £2.5 bn, yes BILLION, each. This out of control public spending had to be stopped. There was no time to wait for the electorate to decide. MPs are there to represent us, not to be representative of us. They must do what they believe is in our best interests, not what the electorate thinks.
