My view is that a professional ought to be a trained reflective practitioner - who would update skills and knowledge on his/her own initiative. That is one of the marks of a professional/profession. In reality though solicitors are often employees of not always reasonable firms and certainly time in which to to undertake reflective updating is not valued as work. The firm-based approach is therefore a necessary one - to change the culture.
