Well, as someone who has given training widely for the last 10 years (otherwise known as a grasping leech to Peter Piper!) I am often surprised by the gaps in experienced lawyers knowledge. Most learning, to be honest, is on the job, but stand up training will always have a role. Its the only time you get away from the office to think about what you do. I know what its like, I've been there. But I think there will and should be a move to more on-the-job assists to help people in the work place rather than go on a course, think ' oh that was interesting' and then not have the time to actually change anything or draft that letter of advice to use. To that end on the subject of SDLT I have just put some handy SDLT guides on my website www.mackinlaytraining.co.uk which I hope people will find useful. (This isn't a shameless plug as after the e-commerce shop & paypal charges there's not much left for me!) . I think Susskind was sadly right when he says it will go the way of expert systems and commoditisation for all but the top drawer work sadly! Me, think I will have to find another way to find a crust in 2 years time instead of training. Retire? Pension? Don't be silly I was a private practice lawyer, not a bureaucrat at a regulator!
