I've worked at mid-size/large firms for 12 years. The point is that women don't operate on a level playing field. Law firms are old fashioned and operate in a way designed by men that allow men to succeed - generally way behind the times on flexible and part time working and over-confidence and "pushyness" (a gender trait more commonly found in men) is highly rewarded. I leave at a decent time and work part time. What nobody sees is that I go home and work and work on my days off.

Law firms are starting to realise that a balance of genders helps profitability and team cohesion. To get that balance you have to favour women because women don't rise to the top under the system that most firms operate. That is not because they are less intelligent or work less hard, its because there is an inbuilt bias. Honestly, I never used to believe it but its true and I've seen it time and time again.
