This is not a welcome development but there are clearly some ill-informed lawyers 'out there'. Hopefully there are still some lawyers who recall the days when managing clerks were a significant feature of legal practice. Many were without any formal qualification yet set up and ran trusts, handled divorces and property settlements, were the backbone of conveyancing departments and almost dominated estate administration. No one complained and I am not referring to pre second world war but the 70s and early 80s. Looking forward we may have already reached a point where the number of lawyers exceeds demand. If this is the case then paralegals working with new sophisticated IT systems may present the only practical opportunity to manage a situation where the clients control the pricing mechanism.
