I really don't understand why people are a) annoyed and b) surprised about this. The rise of solicitor-advocates, for which I have much respect by the way, massively affected the Bar. Of course the Bar are going to try and take some work back.

Perhaps barristers won't be at the Police Stations, but the way things are going, neither will solicitors. Direct access to the Bar is simply the Bar trying to evolve in order to survive in this changing legal sphere. Makes perfect sense to me.
