I am afraid that religion is being conflated with racism by a lot of people. People in public should not be able to conceal their identity in this manner. If we are all subject to the same rule how is this racism?

Courts have in the past conflated religious freedom with health & safety issues: the example of Sikhs who do not have to wear helmets when driving motorcycles in some countries. The courts got this one wrong, it is a question of health & safety. Nobody is compelled to ride a motorbike.
