Well said, Charles, it does boil down to a question of who is in charge here. I have a lot to do with French lawyers and they see things quite differently from us. In fact the state there has been listening in on Sarcozy's calls quite extensively, hence his recent arrest. They view this as routine.

We at least are only introducing it to defend this country from its enemies both within and without. What's wrong with that? I know these activities can be subverted e g by HMRC, but those whose job it is to defend the state need every tool they can be handed to do so. Concepts such as freedom, liberty, privacy, and so on are all very well, but it is those very concepts that are being threatened and we stand to lose a lot more than them should we fail.
