Court interpretation is a skilled job. Just speaking the language is not enough. How often do hear a question asked a discussion in the foreign language and then a monosyllabic answer? All linguists should have training in the skill if they are to do the job. A person from Chinatown would be unlikely to be suitable. In fact in over 30 years of prosecuting I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of fully competent interpreters that I have seen in Court. The whole attitude of doing the job on the cheap is wrong and not in accordance with the Hague Convention.
