Two problems at the moment with getting a salaried judicial appointment, for anybody: (1) you will not get a look in unless you have held a part-time appointment for at least 2 years, and (2) once you take a salaried appointment the terms and conditions say you cannot return to practice.
So (1) means it can take an age to get close to even a low-level full-time appointment because you have to succeed in two judicial appointment competitions, and (2) means that it is a huge gamble because there is no turning back.
Are either of these really necessary?
