To respond to Richard Whitehurst, you are quite right and with perseverance and dedication a solicitor can do it. But the point is that it takes much longer than it seems to take for barristers which I am sure is one of the reasons why fewer solicitors are attaining high judicial office.

The equivalent route for barristers seems to be Pupillage. Barrister. Recorder. High Court Judge.
