i am the senior Coroner for Cornwall. I was appointed when I was 35 and I was under the impression that I would be in a career progression position. How wrong I was, with a PHD from Cambridge and articles from a leading city law firm, it was a shock to me to find there was not formal career progression in place. In fact there was the opposite! There was no formal maternity provision at the birth of my daughter in 2001 (Daily Telegraph Nov 2001) and inappropriate comments/dealing left me feeling that had made a very bad career move. I am now 51 and I am off sick with two fractured ankles , there appears to be little resilience plan in place. i am not e even sure I will receive sick pay despite paying NI. I was also very concerned to find out that the compulsory training is not university linked like other professions and I have not had formal diversity training - this means that if I had to reapply for my job in theory I would fail to be eligible!
