Maybe judges should formally publish CMC decisions so the profession can see whether solicitors are deliberately inflating or low-balling costs for tactical advantage. In most cases solicitors are reasonable with directions and costs, and there is no need for a CMC.

Of course, it's a nonsense to have cost estimates that are in any way binding at this stage of the game anyway, before evidence is exchanged and given on oath, and especially given the case is almost certain to settle pre-trial...
