I had a costs and case management conference recently before a DJ who did not like it when our QC argued that the judge was simply bartering with the parties on costs and not managing the case and costs properly. Point in case: "the claimant claims £X for this, the defendant challenges and says it should be £Y. I therefore take the middle ground and re-budget at £Z"

There is a lot to be done before the courts can start to budget properly, and it needs to start with more training. No wonder it is beyond most judges when they've had less than 2 hours training on it. Is that sufficient for a multi-million pound child cerebral palsy case??!?!
