All of a piece with the typical idiocy of most lenders, in this case they are simply constructing tenuous claims in order to tap into PI policies. Most insurers will settle at the drop of a hat anyway. Net result is that the profession is effectively underwriting lenders inability to lend responsibly. In the heady days of 2006 I remember calling our own mortgage lender for a further advance to add a small extension to our house - I wanted £30,000 as I recall. Our lender offered us up to £500,000 if we wanted to move instead. As Tommy Cooper used to say "just like that". I was told it would be a formality. Laughable? yes. Responsible? No.
