What i had in mind was the legal aid system as it existed before ATE insurance, not an existing arrangement, but rather a possible fall back position.

Perhaps if our awards were more generous, or should that be less parsimonious, more lawyers would, as you imply, take the risk. But with the level of awards as it is now the risk is too great for most firms to contemplate.

I am pleased, and relieved, to say that I am no longer in the profession. As with the Welsh rugby, I just watch from the touch line now, shouting the odds and glad that I am no longer out there in the thick of it being kicked from post to post on a Saturday afternoon, or Friday evening, for little, if any, reward!
